HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY NEWS - August 24, 2010
Hillsborough County Commissioner Rose Ferlita to Address Prescription Drug Abuse Summit This Friday, August 27th, the medical, pharmacy, legislative and law enforcement communities will be meeting in Tampa to develop strategies to combat the epidemic of prescription drug abuse. One of their speakers and panel members is County Commissioner and Pharmacist Rose Ferlita, who will talk about short and long term solutions to the onslaught of "doctor shoppers" and "drug seekers". The day-long Prescription Drug Abuse Summit will be held at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina, 700 South Florida Avenue, Grand Salons A-D. The Summit is sponsored by the Associates in Emergency Medical Education (AIEME). Commissioner Ferlita will serve on the Legislative Panel, with discussion taking place from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. As a pharmacist for more than 40 years, Commissioner Ferlita has seen the ill effects of prescription drugs when attained illegally, the abuse on families and the desperation of the drug-addicted. She herself has been robbed at gunpoint by a criminal demanding money and drugs. In 2009, Ferlita served as a member of the statewide Office of Drug Control's Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Task Force and successfully lobbied the passage of Senate Bill 462, which will soon monitor prescription drug transactions throughout the state.
